Mr Maurice (Maurie) Albert Dean – 1979 to 1992
Born in Dargaville in 1934, he went to primary school there before moving to Christchurch where his secondary school education was achieved.
He graduated from Victoria University in 1960 with a Master of Arts degree in Latin, and after taking a Diploma of Teaching with distinction at the Christchurch Teachers Training College, began his career at Kelston Boys High School, Auckland where he remained for 15 years; 5 of them as was Deputy Head in 1978. He then went to Avondale College as Associate Principal, a post he held for two years before coming to Whangārei Boys' High School.
Mr Dean, took control as the new headmaster of Whangārei Boys’ High School in July of 1979, he was the first Northlander to hold this position
Mr Dean was a native of Dargaville and a member of a well-known Northland sporting family. Two of his brothers were North Auckland rugby representatives. Although not personally active in sport Mr Dean took a lively interest in the sports in which his pupils participated.
One of his immediate plans was to try and arrange for a new gymnasium – which became a reality under his leadership. New sporting codes were allowed to flourish and outdoor education was established. He was also managed the development of the music suite, Maori studies block, tuck shop, second art room, new library, computer room, and the office.
In his 14 years as headmaster, the number of periods a day changed from eight, to seven and then to five.
Mr Dean passed away peacefully in Waikanae on 13 June 2021, aged 86 years.
